What does diversity mean to you?
Diversity means bringing together people with a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, viewpoints, and interests. This includes of course socioenonomic status, gender, ethnicity, nationality, language, religion, and sexual orientation, but for me it is a much broader concept – it is really about bringing together people that think and live in different ways.
Why do you care about diversity?
I believe that diversity is important for any organisation or society to thrive. Diversity implies greater openness, creativity, interchange and sharing of ideas, dialogue, and knowledge.
How can we build more inclusive communities?
It is important that the leadership be engaged towards building inclusive communities. Before voting for any personnel representative, or political candidate, ask yourself if this person will actively be promoting and developing diversity. But of course, it’s not only about the leadership. Everyone has a role to play, be it by talking openly about diversity, challenging an existing unsatisfactory situation, or by simply being inclusive whenever they can in their daily lives. Thinking more broadly, valuing diversity is a question of mentality and education. So teachers, educators, parents, and role models should have in mind that they have a huge influence on how diversity matters evolve in the society.
What is your advice to a young person starting their career or entrepreneurial journey?
Never let other people convince you that you can’t do something or that something is too crazy or stupid. Believe in yourself, and you’ll get there!
